LEADERSHIP STRATEGIC THINKING: CHANGES, RISKS AND FOCUS

Oleksandr Sudarkin, MIM-Kyiv MBA and Pre-MBA “M&L” programs director and business coach with more than 15 years of experience held the online facilitation session for more than 50 participants.
Oleksandr used the Horizon of Expectation approach. He used sailing as a metaphor because navigating the current uncertain global environment is very similar to sailing on high seas. The participants worked together to learn how leaders can involve their teams in strategic planning, account for the risks, and map routes.
The group was divided into four large groups. Here are the outcomes of their work.
Self-Motivation Group
Treasure hunter’s motivation:
- If I am not on the Forbes Billionaire list, I have to act;
- Recognition and self-development motivate;
- I need to impact everything that is important for me;
- I follow my own agenda and priorities;
- I make my choices based on my values.
Move Forward Group
- Any strategy must be implemented in phases;
- People indicate the success: if they follow me, my strategy works;
- Younger generation employees help to keep pace with trends;
- Strategies must be sustainable and long-term;
- Team members development have to be the part of the strategy;
- Make SWOT analysis to develop strategy;
- Follow current situations, trends and do benchmarks to develop your strategy.
Risks/Reefs, Teams and Processes Group
- Risk analysis in each process;
- Risk mitigation against four methods;
- PESTEL analysis;
- Resources assessment and thrifty utilization;
- Risk mitigation training;
- Coping with inactive employees;
- Team risk management.
After Finding Treasure Group
To be agreed upon on the shore
- What is our Plan B;
- Administrators and integrators are good at retro analysis (according to Adizes);
- Boost participants value BEFORE achieving goals;
- Prepare parallel projects;
- Each project is a learning experience;
- Each project increases both leaders’ and their teams' value.
