Oleksandr Sudarkin, MIM-Kyiv professor of leadership and organizational communications joined the Experts’ Council at the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. Together with other prominent Ukrainian scholars who specialize in veterans’ affairs, he would participate in advising activities aimed at veterans’ rehabilitation, adaptation, and integration into civilian life.
Oleksandr believes that most Ukrainian veterans stand on their own two feet. That’s why activities aimed at post-war adaptation should go beyond assistance and include the promotion of opportunities. In his speech he said:
- Currently, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs focus is very similar to the focus of protection of selected demographics. It is very similar to many post-Soviet ministries practices. I think this approach needs to be widened. In my opinion, the Ministry should create and promote opportunities and encourage veterans to grab those opportunities. I do not think that the image of a crippled person desperate for protection reflects the comprehensive picture. Many veterans are successful and motivated young people ready to embark on numerous opportunities. Helping them realize their talents and make the most of the existing opportunities is one of the most important challenges.
Cooperation with the Ministry of Defense was another important discussion point. The Armed Forces of Ukraine is one of the largest national employers although very few think about this facet of the Army. People who serve in the military acquire valuable experience that can be applied in their civil careers. “We are going coordinate our activities aimed at mastering and honing the skills that are critical for becoming a good employee, manager, or entrepreneur with the stakeholders,” Oleksandr mentioned. He also mentioned that he would join the coordination of psychological help and rehabilitation activities.
Minister Yuliia Laputina said: “There are many scientists in Ukraine who are veterans or volunteers. By involving such specialists in important state processes, we show that veterans are active people who develop themselves, develop their own business, industry, community, and shape the agenda of our society.”
